As I've mentioned elsewhere on this blog, I am not limiting my current work search to openings for office jobs.
One wouldn't know it to look at my resume (since the resume focuses primarily on my most recent job experiences), but I also have a fairly substantial amount of experience working in restaurants. When I was younger, I worked almost exclusively in food service jobs.
I actually enjoyed doing restaurant work quite a bit. The only issue for me at the time was the fact that the pay scale tended to be lower for food service jobs. Consequently, I eventually got into doing office work, after obtaining a certificate in word processing from Newbury College in Boston. But I've never considered that restaurant work was beneath me, nor do I consider that such is the case today.
Regarding the current pay scale for restaurant work and office work respectively, I've noticed that the differences between hourly pay for restaurant work and hourly pay for office work seem to be less objectionable than they used to be. I know some folks who make as much doing restaurant work as I ever made doing office work. In any event, a job which pays less than one might desire is still a whole lot better than having no job at all, which is my current situation. Also, I've noticed that restaurant work seems to offer a lot more opportunities in terms of working overtime to make extra money, whereas such opportunities are rare when one is doing office work.
Also, one thing I always liked about restaurant work was the fact that the hours were often very flexible. Typically, it's hard to get a good office job unless one wants to work the standard hours of 9 to 5. One does what one needs to do, but I prefer to be able to choose my schedule (when feasible) from a wider selection of available hours. I'm not too keen on third shift work (which I've done once in my life), because it really throws one's internal clock out of whack. But I have no problem with night-time jobs which end at midnight or later, provided that adequate and affordable transportation is available so that I can get home afterwards.
After evaluating the current national economic situation in relation to my own employment situation and in relation to my current goals, I've decided to begin to actively pursue restaurant work once again. I think that doing so will greatly increase the chances that I'll find work in the very near future. That's very important to me.
Therefore, please do not dismiss the possibility of hiring me to work in such a job for no better reason than the fact that it's been quite some time since I last did such work. I believe that a restaurant owner or manager who hires me can look forward to a long and productive working relationship with me, even if the nature of the job might cause some people to characterize it as "menial" labor. In my estimation, no job is truly menial if it's necessary.
